Causal Map Subscription Agreement
Effective date: 1 January 2024
1. Service description
Causal Map Ltd (“Company”, “we”, “us”) provides a cloud-based software service for qualitative data analysis and causal mapping (“Service”). The Service is accessed via web browser and includes tools for coding causal narratives, analysing data, and creating visualisations.
2. Account and subscriptions
- You are responsible for maintaining confidentiality of your login credentials.
- You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service.
- Free accounts are for individual, non-commercial use.
- Paid subscriptions are billed annually or monthly as selected at sign-up.
- You may cancel at any time; cancellations take effect at the end of your billing period.
3. Acceptable use policy
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable laws.
- Upload, transmit, or code content that is abusive, defamatory, obscene, or otherwise unlawful.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service.
- Reproduce, distribute, or resell the Service or any portion of it.
- Use the Service to compete with or build a competing product or service.
- Interfere with, disrupt, or overload the Service infrastructure.
4. Your data
- You own all data you upload to the Service.
- We use your data only to provide the Service, improve our product, and comply with legal obligations.
- We do not sell, share, or use your data for marketing without your consent.
- You are responsible for ensuring that you have the right to upload and use your data, including obtaining necessary consent from research participants.
5. AI features
Some features use artificial intelligence (AI) to suggest codes, analyse patterns, or generate summaries. AI suggestions are not guaranteed to be accurate. You are responsible for reviewing, editing, and validating all AI suggestions. We do not accept liability for errors or omissions in AI-generated content.
6. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for:
- Loss of data, revenue, or profits.
- Indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages.
- Errors or omissions in the Service or AI features.
Our total liability to you under this agreement is limited to fees you have paid in the preceding 12 months.
7. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Company from any claims, damages, or costs arising from:
- Your use of the Service.
- Your violation of this agreement.
- Your violation of third-party rights, including intellectual property rights.
9. Term and termination
This agreement is effective when you create an account and continues until terminated. We may terminate or suspend your account if you breach this agreement or use the Service illegally. You may delete your account at any time.
10. Changes to this agreement
We may update this agreement at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
11. Governing law
This agreement is governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of England.

Prohibited use
The following uses are strictly prohibited:
- Using the Service for surveillance, harassment, or stalking.
- Uploading copyrighted content without permission.
- Attempting to gain unauthorised access to the Service or other users’ data.
- Using the Service to develop weapons, conduct discrimination, or cause harm.
- Violating sanctions or export control laws.
Violation of these terms may result in immediate account termination and legal action.
Enforcement
We reserve the right to enforce these terms, including terminating accounts and legal action. We will make reasonable efforts to inform you of violations before termination, except where immediate action is necessary to prevent harm or protect the Service.
Service Level Agreement
Availability guarantee
We aim to maintain 99.5% uptime for the Causal Map Service. Uptime is measured excluding scheduled maintenance and events beyond our control (for example, ISP outages or DDoS attacks).
Scheduled maintenance
We perform maintenance during off-peak hours, typically 00:00 to 06:00 UTC on weekdays. We will notify users at least 48 hours in advance of significant maintenance.
Support response times
Private plans:
- Email support: response within 72 hours on business days.
Pro and Team plans:
- Priority email support: response within 24 hours on business days.
- Dedicated support contact for Team plans.
- Phone support available for Team plan customers.
Data backup
- Your data is backed up every 10 minutes and retained for at least 30 days.
- Pro and Team customers can restore data in the app.
Incident response
If the Service experiences a significant outage:
- We will investigate immediately and post status updates on our status page.
- We aim to restore service within 48 hours.
- We will notify customers of significant incidents and resolution timelines.
Service credits
If we fail to meet our 99.5% uptime target in a calendar month, qualifying customers are entitled to service credits:
- 99%–99.5% uptime: 5% credit.
- 95%–99% uptime: 10% credit.
- Below 95% uptime: 25% credit.
Credits are applied to the next billing period. Credits do not constitute a refund of fees.
To claim a credit, contact hello@causalmap.app within 30 days of the incident.
Exclusions
Service credits do not apply to:
- Downtime caused by events outside our control (natural disasters, ISP issues, cyberattacks).
- Downtime resulting from your use of the Service in violation of these terms.
- Issues caused by third-party services or plugins you use with the Service.
- Scheduled maintenance of which we gave notice.
Changes to this SLA
We may update this SLA with 30 days’ notice. Continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance.
